Which puzzle for which mood
- Five minutes with a coffee: Guesswise. Six guesses at a five-letter word, most of them off a farm, with a shape as well as a colour on every tile. There are 227 Guesswise puzzles, and a word of the day if you want the same one as everyone else.
- A longer think: Combword. Seven letters, the middle one compulsory, words of four letters or more, and a pangram in every one of the 53 hives. The hint table counts what is left rather than what exists.
- If you like spotting the trick: Groupseek. Sixteen words, four secret groups of four, four mistakes. There are 90 sets, and a wrong guess that holds three of one group is told so.
- If you like word searches: Gridseek. Every letter of the six by eight grid belongs to a themed word, and a spangram names the theme. There are 96 grids, and you earn hints by finding other words.
- Against real people: Letterloft, a crossword tile game on the full fifteen by fifteen board with the hundred-tile bag. Two to four players over a link, or you against the computer.
The first four live together in Wordburrow, one page with all four on the menu.
Built for reading, not for squinting
Nothing in the word games is smaller than 18 pixels, text clears AAA contrast, and there is no timer anywhere, so nobody is rushed. That makes them a good fit for older players and for anyone playing on a phone at arm's length. Your progress lives in your own browser, with no account.
Playing with someone else
Press Play together in any of the four puzzles and you get a room with a six-character code. Up to four people can join from their own phones or computers and work the same puzzle together: it is co-operative, not a race. For a head-to-head game, Letterloft is the one - send the link and take turns on one board.
Questions
Is there a daily five-letter word game here?
Yes. Guesswise gives you six guesses at a five-letter word, with a word of the day. The other puzzles are not locked, so you can play one a day or twenty in a sitting.
Are these word games really free with no ads and no download?
Yes. They run in the browser tab, there is no account to make, nothing to install and no ads.
Can I play a word game with a friend online?
Yes. The four puzzle games have a Play together room that up to four people can share on their own devices, working one puzzle co-operatively. Letterloft is the competitive one: two to four players on one board, joined from a link.
