Which board for which friend
- The one who takes it seriously: Rookwise is the full game, with castling, en passant, promotion and every draw. It is two players, and if nobody is around the computer plays at your level.
- The one who wants something quicker: Jumpwise is English draughts: twelve sheep against twelve cows, takes are compulsory, multiple jumps chain, and a piece that reaches the far side is crowned.
- The family group chat: Pawnrush takes up to four. You need a six to come out and an exact roll to get home, which is exactly as unfair as it was on the kitchen table. Every team has a shape as well as a colour, so nobody needs to tell red from orange.
- The word person: Letterloft is a crossword tile game on the full fifteen by fifteen board, with the real hundred-tile bag, premium squares and the fifty-point bonus for using all seven tiles. Two to four players, or you against the computer.
How to set up a game with a friend on another computer
- Open the game's page and press Play. The board appears in the tab; nothing installs.
- Choose to play with a friend and start a room. You get a link.
- Send the link however you usually talk: text, email, a group chat, the chat box of a video call.
- Your friend opens it in their browser - laptop, Chromebook, tablet or phone - and takes a seat.
Neither of you makes an account. The two browsers connect directly, so there is no server holding your game. The pieces are big and clear, which helps on a phone and helps anybody whose eyes are not what they were.
Questions
Can I play chess online with a friend without signing up?
Yes. Open Rookwise, start a room and send the link. Your friend opens it in their browser and you are on the same board. Neither of you makes an account.
How many people can play Ludo online together?
Up to four, each on their own device, joining from one link. The computer takes any team nobody took, so two or three players still get a full game.
Is there a clock or a timer?
No. None of the four board games has a clock, so nobody loses on time.
